PortsToronto and City of Toronto Begin Ship Channel Lift Bridge Rehabilitation Project
Beginning Monday, March 28, 2022, PortsToronto in partnership with the City of Toronto, will commence a major rehabilitation program to restore and modernize the ageing Ship Channel Lift Bridge, a vital piece of infrastructure supporting Toronto’s supply chain. The restoration of the Ship Channel Lift Bridge will occur over a four-year period, from 2022 to 2025.
Throughout this construction period, the bridge will be restricted to a single lane of vehicle traffic. Northbound and southbound vehicle traffic will be accommodated by alternating access to the single lane, controlled by temporary traffic lights. Access for pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained via either the east or west sidewalk.
It is necessary to rehabilitate this bridge, originally constructed in 1931, in order to ensure the continued safe transportation of cargo and goods across the bridge while maintaining marine, vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic along the various rights of way serviced by the bridge.
This project will modernize three key components of this ageing infrastructure, namely:
- Rehabilitation of the bridge north and south roadway approach spans
- Restoration of the Bascule lift bridge structure
- Replacement of end of life mechanical and electrical lift systems
PortsToronto consults with the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation on all projects.
