PortsToronto to Execute Necessary Structural Repairs to Ship Channel Bridge in Anticipation of 2022 Rehabilitation Project in Partnership with City of Toronto
Toronto (September 29, 2021) – In order to accommodate necessary structural repairs to the bridge roadway, the Ship Channel Bridge will be restricted to a single lane of vehicle traffic between Wednesday, October 6 and Friday, October 29. Throughout this project, the north-bound lane of the bridge will remain open to ensure vehicle access. Northbound and southbound traffic will be accommodated by alternating access to the single lane, controlled by temporary traffic lights. Access for pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained via both the east and west sidewalks.
The structural repairs are a necessary first step of the major rehabilitation program that PortsToronto, in partnership with the City of Toronto, will undertake from 2022-2025. The program will commence next year to modernize the ageing Ship Channel Bridge, a vital piece of infrastructure supporting Toronto’s supply chain. PortsToronto expects that the restoration of the Ship Channel Lift Bridge will occur over a four-year period in order to ensure the continued safe transportation of cargo and goods across the bridge while maintaining marine, vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic along the various rights of way serviced by the bridge.
