PortsToronto Releases Ninth-Annual Environment, Social and Governance Report

Toronto (June 27, 2024) — PortsToronto today released its ninth-annual Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) report, marking a significant milestone as the first report issued following the formalization of the organization’s ESG strategy in 2023.

This year’s report underscores PortsToronto’s dedication to minimizing impact and integrating sustainable practices throughout its operations, including Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, the marine Port of Toronto and the Outer Harbour Marina. The technical report, which provides a detailed accounting of PortsToronto’s value creation across the six capitals – Natural, Human, Social, Intellectual, Financial and Manufactured – focuses on the ESG topics that our stakeholders have deemed most significant to our business.

Environmental Stewardship

  • PortsToronto businesses are 100% powered by clean, renewable electricity through Bullfrog Power.
  • Since 2010, PortsToronto has avoided 31,233 tonnes of CO2. 
  • That’s equivalent to:
    • 6,965 cars taken off the road for one year.
    • 15,167 hectares of forests grown for a year.
    • 1.18 million light bulbs switched to LEDs.
  • Nearly 63,000 small pieces of plastic debris were removed from Lake Ontario as part of the PortsToronto Trash Trapping Program.
  • Outer Harbour Marina earned Diamond rating in Boating Ontario Clean Marine Program.

Social Responsibility

  • PortsToronto invested more than $360,000 in our communities in 2023, and has contributed $28 million in community investment and environmental initiatives since 2009.
  • Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport generates over $2.1 billion in total annual economic output and supports 4,450 jobs. Port of Toronto drives over $460 million in economic activity and supports approximately 2,000 jobs in the region each year. 
  • Our 2023 employee survey found that 86 per cent of our staff feel pride in working at PortsToronto.

Governance Excellence

  • New vision developed and unveiled in 2023, Transportation Reimagined, reflective of PortsToronto’s determination to lead the future of transportation and deliver solutions for connectivity, economic opportunity and quality of life in Toronto.
  • In 2023, PortsToronto initiated work to confirm pay equity and formalize our diversity, equity and inclusion strategy.
  • PortsToronto employee health and wellness program recognized at the Canada Workplace Benefits Awards in 2023.
