Requirement For Powered Vessel Operator’s Permit

In compliance with the Toronto Port Authority’s Practices and Procedures and pursuant to the section of the Canada Marine Act dealing with the promotion of safe and efficient navigation in the waters of the Port of Toronto, be advised that:

All persons, including visitors, planning to operate any vessel equipped with an engine, within the boundaries of Toronto Harbour, are required to have a valid Toronto Port Authority Powered Vessel Operator’s Permit.

Individuals must be a minimum of fourteen (14) years of age to apply for an Operator’s Permit. Appointments are required to take the required written and practical examination by telephoning 416-778-1230.

Permits expire on December 31st of each year. Renewal forms will be sent to the address shown on the permit in the Spring of the following year. Operators should return the forms by mail, along with the appropriate fee. Under Section 59 of the Canada Marine Act, Subsection (1)(a), it is an offence if a person or ship does not follow these practices and procedures.

For further clarification, the Pleasure Craft Operators Card issued pursuant to Coast Guard Regulations is required in addition to the Powered Vessel Operator’s Permit.
