Cruising season sails to a close at Port of Toronto

The October arrival of the MV Saint Laurent marked the close of another great cruising season at the Port of Toronto. Welcoming nearly 5,000 passengers on 13 cruise ships from around the world, PortsToronto saw cruise visits nearly double this year compared to 2014.

Some of the season highlights include a visit from the impressive MS Hamburg, travelling from Germany to bring more than 370 European passengers and 170 crew members to Toronto and the Great Lakes region. Her 16-night cruise of the Great Lakes started in Montreal, with stops including Toronto, Chicago and Milwaukee.

With her first visit on May 16, the MV Saint Laurent held the honours as both the first and last cruise ship to visit the Port of Toronto this year. The 210-passenger U.S. vessel called on the port nine times throughout the summer, providing an opportunity for passengers to disembark and spend a day taking in the sights around Canada’s largest city.

In 2016, PortsToronto is expecting cruise visits to continue growing, with 15 ships carrying 5,400 passengers scheduled to call on the port. As one of Canada’s largest major inland ports and only steps from downtown, the Port of Toronto is an increasingly popular cruise destination as it offers a unique urban experience to travellers making their way through the magnificent vistas that the Great Lakes have to offer.
